A TGL classic between Tiger and Rory

This past Monday, Jan 27th, TGL finally had its first real competitive competition. Tiger Woods’ Jupiter Links GC battled it out with Rory McIlroy’s Boston Commons GC, going back and forth with electric shots and excitement. The match ended up going to overtime, the first this has happened in TGL history, and Jupiter Links ended up coming out on top. The star of the show was Tom Kim, who made a handful of clutch putts for Jupiter Links and helped lead them to a victory.

Boy did TGL need this night. It had its two biggest names going head-to-head in possibly the most anticipated match of the season so far, and it did not disappoint. TGL has had plenty of potential all season, but all of the matches leading up to last week all resulted in blowouts that likely caused many viewers to become disinterested and resort to changing the channel or scrolling on their phone as the match went on. But Monday night showed how electric it can be, and we can only hope that we have some more matches like that in the future!

With what seemed like the first weekend in ages that didn’t have football, golf had a chance to shine and spotlight one of its most iconic and eye-catching venues. Rory McIlory won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-AM tournament with a score of -21. Rory battled off big names like Shane Lowry, Sepp Straka, Justin Rose, and an injured Scotty Scheffler. But Rory showed us why he’s still one of, if not, the best golfers in the world. Rory did what he did best: big booming drives, excellent iron shots, and the putter was hot when he needed it to be. You just had to know he was going to do something special when he made a slam dunk ace on the 15th hole during round one! Sepp Straka led the tournament for the first two days, but Rory made a weekend charge, shooting -7 and -6 over Saturday and Sunday. Rory showed us why he’s elite, and that he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

Rory’s win at Pebble Beach gives him his 27th career PGA Tour win. Why is this such a big deal? This places him at the 21st spot of most PGA Tour wins ever! Even more impressive? This ties him with Vijay Singh for most career PGA Tour wins for active players, and trails behind only Phil Mickelson (45) and Tiger Woods (82). This begs the question that we ask every year:

Will Rory win at Augusta this year and complete the career grand slam?
